How many seats do you actually need?

Almost every group that calls us asks for a vehicle by the name they have heard — usually "17-seater tempo traveller" — rather than by what their group needs. Sometimes that is right. Often it costs them money, or comfort, or both.

The number nobody publishes

Operators quote a per-kilometre rate. What actually decides value is that rate divided by the seats you fill. Run it across our fleet and the shape of the market becomes obvious.

Two things jump out. The 17-seater is cheaper per kilometre than the 12-seater — ₹23 against ₹24 — because we run more of them and utilisation is higher. And a 45-seater bus, the vehicle people assume is extravagant, is the cheapest seat in the fleet at ₹1.13 per kilometre per passenger.

If you are 4 to 6 people

Take a cab. An Ertiga at ₹16/km carries six with three suitcases and parks where nothing larger will. A Swift Dzire at ₹11/km is the cheapest thing on the road if you are four with light luggage. The only reason to step up to an Innova Crysta at the same ₹16/km is distance — over 200 km the suspension and the third-row legroom start to matter.

If you are 7 to 12 people

This is where the 12-seater looks obvious and often is not. Twelve seats means twelve people seated, and once you do that the luggage bay is tight. If your group is ten or more with bags, price the 17-seater — it is ₹1 per kilometre cheaper and gives you five empty seats to spread into.

A 250 km day in a 12-seater costs ₹6,000 plus ₹350 driver allowance. The same day in a 17-seater costs ₹5,750 plus ₹350. The bigger vehicle is genuinely cheaper.

If you are 13 to 20 people

The 17-seater is the most-booked vehicle in Varanasi for good reason. Above seventeen, the 20-seater avoids splitting into two vehicles — which matters more than the rate, because two vehicles means two drivers, two parking problems, and a group that keeps losing each other at every stop.

If you are 21 to 30 people

Either a 26-seater or a 40-seater bus. The 26-seater still parks in ordinary hotel forecourts and still turns in Varanasi's outer lanes. A bus does neither, but at ₹1.18 per seat per kilometre it is cheaper per head than the 26-seater's ₹1.15 only once you actually fill it. Under thirty people, take the 26.

If you are 30 or more

A bus, without much argument. Weddings, temple committees and corporate movements land here, and the per-head economics are decisive. The constraint is not cost but access: a 40-seater and up cannot enter the old city, needs a planned parking point — usually Godowlia, Maidagin or your hotel forecourt — and wants an extra thirty minutes built into every city leg.

The constraint that applies to every size

No vehicle reaches Kashi Vishwanath. Everyone stops at Godowlia crossing and walks roughly ten minutes through Vishwanath Gali. That is a municipal restriction on the old city, not something a bigger booking solves. Plan the walk, especially if the group includes elders.
