Magh Mela 2027 from Varanasi: getting a group to the Sangam and back

UP Tourism has Magh Mela 2027 down for 15 January to 6 March, on the sands at the Sangam in Prayagraj. For a group staying in Varanasi we'd almost always say go and come back the same day in a tempo traveller. It's 125 km, so two and a half or three hours each side, and the whole outing gets billed as a single 250 km day.

When are the main bathing days in 2027?

Most snan calendars line up. Kalpvas starts with Paush Purnima on 22 January. Mauni Amavasya, on 6 February, is the day that pulls in the biggest crowd, and nothing else in the season comes close. After that there's Basant Panchami (11 February), Maghi Purnima (20 February), and finally Mahashivratri on 6 March to close the mela.

The only real muddle is Makar Sankranti. A few panchangs put it on the 14th, while the official calendar opens the mela on the 15th. We plan for crowds on both days, and we read the mela authority's notice the week before rather than guessing.

What does a day trip cost for a group?

Here's the sum for our 17-seater, which is what most temple groups book. Two hundred and fifty km at ₹23 a kilometre is ₹5,750, and the driver allowance is ₹350, so ₹6,100 for the day before GST. Toll and parking are added at whatever they actually cost, and we show them as separate lines on the bill.

VehicleDay return, before GSTEach, if full
12-seater tempo traveller₹6,350about ₹530
17-seater tempo traveller₹6,100about ₹360
45-seater luxury bus₹13,350about ₹300

Staying the night at the mela changes the maths more than people expect. Two days means two days of minimum billing, so the same 17-seater comes to ₹12,200 even though it drives no further. If your group isn't doing Kalpvas, a day return is usually the better deal.

Why the last few kilometres are the hard part

The road from Varanasi to Prayagraj is fine. It's the mela area that slows everything down. On the big bathing days the police close the roads near the Sangam to private vehicles and send them to parking on the edge of the mela, and from there it's a long walk on sand. The traffic plan for each snan usually comes out a few days before, and our drivers follow it, not last year's.

So we plan the day backwards from where the vehicle can actually stop. For a group with older people, that might mean a quieter day in the same week, when the vehicle can get much closer and the dip is calmer. Honestly, for Mauni Amavasya with grandparents, we'd suggest going a day early.

A day plan that works

Leave Varanasi around four in the morning, so you're at the Sangam for the early light and out before the midday crowd. Keep warm layers in the vehicle, because January mornings by the river are cold, and wet clothes on the way back are worse. Agree one meeting point at the parking area before anyone walks off, since phone signal drops when lakhs of people are in one place.

On the way home there's time for Bade Hanuman and Akshayavat if the queues allow. Most groups are back in Varanasi by early evening, in time for the aarti if they still have the energy.

Common questions

When is Magh Mela 2027?
15 January to 6 March 2027, at the Sangam in Prayagraj. Mauni Amavasya on 6 February is the biggest bathing day.
How far is Prayagraj from Varanasi?
About 125 km, and two and a half to three hours by road. A day return is 250 km, which is exactly our one-day minimum, so nothing is wasted.
How much is a tempo traveller from Varanasi to Magh Mela?
A 17-seater day return is ₹6,100 before GST, with toll and parking on top at actual cost. Fill it with 17 people and that's around ₹360 each.
Can vehicles go up to the Sangam during Magh Mela?
Not on the big bathing days. Private vehicles are sent to parking on the edge of the mela and you walk the rest, so build that walk into the plan, especially with elders.
